Here's an interesting factoid, courtesy of the West Fargo Pioneer (registration required): When Congress first made Independence Day a holiday for federal employees in 1870, those employees weren't paid for the day off.

COMMENTS

  • Why should federal employees get paid for the day off anyway?

A large percentage of workers (mostly hourly employees) don't get paid for holidays.

When the economy finally goes down the drain (and the subprime debt crisis it a harbinger), hopefully government employees will realize how good that they had it.

  • This is true, but Federal employees don't get two weeks of paid time off during the holidays like most large manufacturers, so it’s kind of a wash.
