Influence-Peddling Averted
There was a great little first-person account in the Washington Post yesterday by a civil servant about trying to secure an upgrade to business class for a political appointee at an agency -- and being rescued from embarrassment (or worse) by a savvy flight attendant.

Having worked for an airline-related federal agency, I can recall several stories of political appointees trying to get special treatment. Still, U.S. officals are not the only ones to flaunt their importance. I was on a flight when a Russian national offered the flight attendant $100 if she would let him smoke. When she told him that it was against the law, he countered that he was a diplomat and immune to prosecution. She still refused to let him smoke, and he eventually calmed down.
