Davis: Staying Put?
By Tom Shoop | Wednesday, October 17, 2007  |  04:32 PM

Those concerned -- or heartened -- that Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., might leave his longtime perch at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to run for the Senate in Virginia next year may need to do some rethinking. The Hill reports that Davis is now hinting he might not enter the race for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican John Warner. Instead, Davis said he theoretically could wait and take on Democratic Sen. James Webb in 2012.

“There are other races; this isn’t the only shot,” Davis said at a breakfast at the National Press Club on Tuesday. “You’ve got a very vulnerable guy sitting there in the other Senate seat right now who may or may not run in four years. And you know what? If you don’t go to the Senate, so what? I’ve been a committee chairman in the House. I’ve got my portrait hanging on a wall. I’ve been pretty productive legislatively.”

One assumes that Davis' thinking on this subject has been influenced by a recent Washington Post poll showing him trailing Mark Warner, the likely Democratic candidate for John Warner's seat, by 30 points.

If Representative Tom Davis decides to run in 2012 more power to him. If Davis runs for the Senate in 2008 Mark Warner shold win that one.I beleive that Tom Daivs is making too may predictions about 2012. I beleive that Senator Webb will run for reelection, nobody knows how 2012 will be.I seem to reember that most political pundits belived that Sen Allen would win relectio. That did not happen 2012 is a long way from now. I will concede that Davis has a better chance in 2012 going against Jim Webb. If Webb decides to run for reeelction. If not how about the current Governor that would be great race for the Senate in Virginia.

I'm hoping for the same scenario that W. Jackson, above, is. Let's put this RINO out to pasture along with George (how ya like my boots?) Allen. On Davis' watch, federal government procurement process has become a bad joke all over the world; his constituency has changed from patriotic military and government civilians to illegal aliens; his entire district is subject to hopeless gridlock at the mere hint of precipitation. What good is he to either the voters of Northern Virginia or the rest of the country? Nothing. The best he can do for us is retire.

I would rather see Tom Davis run for the John Warners Senate seat in 2008 so Mark Warner can put him out of office and then run against Jim Webb in 2012 so Jim can keep him out of office. That sound like a win-win to me.

It is extremly telling when a political individual who thinks they deserve a position in power will not jeopardize anything unless it is a cake walk. If Tom Davis feels he deserves a place in the Senate - then he should run on his platform not worried about his opponent (both within his party and other party). This my friends is a little bit of being a chicken. Only do things if they are safe.

If he really thought he had something to offer the people of Virginia - instead of thinking he should be annointed - then he would run in 2008.

Here is an interesting position, Davis is facing alittle bit of irrelavance, both with his being in the minority, not gaining support of his state party for a 2008 run, wife losing her state senate seat, etc. etc.
