John Gage just said at a hearing that 25 percent of Transportation Security Officers are American Federation of Government Employees members. That's the first hard number I've heard about any organizing campaign at TSA. I'm assuming TSA employees will get collective bargaining rights in this administration, so I'll be curious to see how many of them join AFGE and the National Treasury Employees Union when they can bargain.

  • They all want the protection but hate to pay dues. I am a union steward for 17 yeard. Never had a dues payer file a grievance. I have given lots of help for free riders.

  • the non payers are just excersing their rights so good for them. why pay dues its a terrible investment

  • I am a union member NFFE-IAMAW 1627. I been paying dues since September 1986. To the non dues paying who lobbies for your pay raise, telework if you are eligible, AWS schedule. Do you honestly believe that the management at your agecny was supportive of these measures. Pay raises defintlely. AWS and telwork not as much. I know that some agenices work well with the union, that is the exception not the rule. Unions do provide a positive benefit for employees.

  • Yeah, "non payers" may be excercising their rights, but they come crying to the steward when they believe they've been wronged by management.

They also benefit from the union efforts to secure better wages and fringe benefits from Congress. Their's another word for "non payers" that probably wouldn't stay up here for very long. 'Nuf said!

  • I pay my dues from every paycheck. The cost of living raises my union helps me get each year show a roughly 5 to 1 payback (and help me keep up with inflation). I can't find ANY stock doing that well, not even gold.

The non-dues payers are just an organizational version of societal freeloaders in the nation as a whole.

Basically, some people want something for nothing and are able to justify the inequities of that to themselves. I think Aseop titled his case study "The Ant and Grasshopper" some 3000 years ago or so.

  • We have a weak local, but strong national. So many use the excuse that the local hasn't been beneficial to decide not to pay dues. Yet, they are willing to reap the benefits of National lobbying and negotiations. This disgusts me! Just selfish and greedy; want not to spend "their" monies.

  • With or without collectively bargaining rights, AFGE has made a commitment to our Nation’s Uniformed Officers of TSA and we are making good on that commitment every day. AFGE recognizes the need for Transportation Security Officers to be represented not only in the workplace but also in Congress and AFGE has the resources, expertise and clout needed to provide effective representation for all uniformed officers from the smallest airport to the largest. AFGE has been there from the beginning. I invite you to join us! www.tsaunion.net
