Ask Sen. Obama to
support the Public Service Academy!

Sen. Obama urges graduates to
pursue public service
 Last month, Sen. John McCain
delivered an outstanding speech about the importance of public
service, and we asked you to contact him about the Academy.
This past weekend, Sen. Obama followed with an extraordinary
commencement
address at Wesleyan University. Filling in for Sen. Edward
Kennedy (a co-sponsor of the Academy bill), Obama urged
graduates to pursue lives of service. His message seemed
tailor-made for the Public Service Academy: "There are so many
ways to serve and so much need at this defining moment in our
history...I ask you to seek these opportunities when you leave
here, because the future of this country -- your future --
depend on it." (The Academy does not endorse Sen. Obama or any other
other candidate in the presidential race. Sen. Clinton already
is a co-sponsor of the Academy bill, and we are working to win
Sen. McCain's support as well.)
How can I help get the Academy on
Sen. Obama's agenda?
We have talked with
Sen. Obama as well as his staff about the Academy. He has
offered rhetorical support but he is not yet a co-sponsor of
the Academy bill. We need your help to get him on board!
Here's what you can do:
1) Call his Senate office TODAY!
202-224-2854 When you reach his office, ask to speak
to the aide who works on homeland security issues (that is the
committee to which the Academy bill has been referred). Here's
a sample of what you could say: - Thank the senator for his
Wesleyan speech. - Urge the senator to co-sponsor the U.S.
Public Service Academy Act (S. 960). - Explain what the
Public Service Academy would be: a civilian counterpart to the
military academies. Students would get a free education in
return for a commitment to serve for five years after
graduation. - Explain that the Public Service Academy will
embody the spirit of service and the culture of compassion
that Sen. Obama stands for. What the Peace
Corps was for JFK, the Public Service Academy can be for Sen.
Obama - a national initiative that institutionalizes
the idealism of his incoming administration. - Ask for a written
response that explains Sen. Obama's position on the
bill.
2) Email his
office Take two minutes and send the senator an
email. When the menu asks for you to select an issue area, you
may choose either "education" or "homeland security." Be sure to ask for a
response!
What good will this
do?
We want Sen. Obama to hear about the
Public Service Academy everywhere he goes. Many of his most
prominent supporters - including Harris Wofford, Tom Daschle,
and Lee Hamilton, as well dozens of superdelegates - are
Academy supporters, and they are helping to bring the Academy
to his attention. But the
people who really matter are voters like you. The more
he hears about it from voters like you, the more the idea will
resonate with him.
