NASA is promoting a return to the Moon with a slick computer-generated video. Click below to watch a lunar base quickly unfurl, listen to the Hollywoodesque drum machine-powered soundtrack and feel the roar of the mighty rocket engines. And click the comment link below to let us know if the video will help NASA convince congressional appropriators to fund the trip.

I was able to access the video. I have several questions:
Who is the intended audience?
Is this how we shape public policy?
If the parting shot is accurate, what's our plan for cleaning up all the stuff we leave behind on the moon?
Jeanne | Monday, May 14, 2007 | 12:10 PMEnjoy the flash and fiction for the billions of taxpayer dollars spent to send people back to the big ball of dust could have been spent to fight crime and fix our declining education system. The last space program was fed to us as scientific conquest. We know now that it was a show of power during the cold war. So tell us the truth:
Is this trip really necessary?
Robert M. | Friday, May 11, 2007 | 11:00 PMI have to admit, it was pretty cool. Maybe the Army can get whoever did this to revamp the "Army Strong" message.

What's lacking is a scene or two showing something rewarding being
accomplished, besides hooking one
cable to another. Establishing a
FULL time colony, preperations for
next step - Mars, etc...
If King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had listened to similar advice, Columbus would have never made it to the new world. It's mankind's destiny to explore and eventually settle on worlds besides our Earth, and we need to support this long-term endeavor. If we waited until poverty were solved before doing so, we'd never venture off of this planet (and we wouldn't do a lot of other worthwhile things as well). We need vision and leadership, not myopic self-centeredness. (By the way, all the money NASA spends is spent right here on Earth).

No adults at NASA anymore? At least not in the PAO, I guess. Why else post this on YouTube, instead of on a NASA site, where serious, intelligent folks (those who end up paying for NASA programs) can see it?
Dapper | Friday, May 11, 2007 | 10:31 AMLooks great, has a decent emotional appeal, but does it make an economic case? I'm for going back, but if you want to convince a lot of lawmakers to fund it, there has to be an economic payoff in the not too distant future - what will be the next Tang or Velcro advance to come out of this effort? We're spending all our money on a "war".
Why not create incentives for private industry to go to the moon??? With NASA's stranglehold on access to space, the only way any of us non-astronauts will get into space is if our relatives some day spend thousands of bucks to shoot our ashes up there!
