Seeking Top-Secret Movers
By Bob Brewin | Wednesday, August 22, 2007  |  03:37 PM

As we all know, moving is a painful experience eased by careful planning. The National-Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) seems to be trying to lessen the pain as much as possible.

The NGA kicked off this week the process for moving 8,500 of its employees, and a whole mess of classified gadgets and gizmos, to new digs at Ft. Belvoir, Va., by 2011.

NGA said in the only procurement notice it plans to issue for the move that it needs a contractor that has the “the proven ability to plan, integrate, organize, synchronize and execute a complex sustained, classified move of equipment, materials” and all the NGA personnel and their office stuff from six locations in the Washington, D.C., area to its new 2.4 million-square-foot building.

NGA is looking for more than a bunch of Irish guys with strong backs and a fleet of trucks. The agency says it needs folks to handle the move who are cleared at the Top Secret/Special Intelligence/Talent Keyhole level.

If anyone knows what all the above means, they’re probably a quarter of the way to getting the job.

Alas, the days are gone that as the rainbow passes into Galloway Bay one can find mirth in the days rain. The Irish have always been noted for their quick wit and ability to poke fun at themselves while knowing they were vastly superiorin many regards, especially their lust for life. Its in the songs, poetry, tales and music. Its always been my Irish heritage that has stood me fast in tough times. Too much political correctness makes Sean a sad lad.

Bob and Brent: You miss Shawn's very valid point. I suspect you both need to wake to the reality of our multi-cultural society and realize such comments are no longer acceptable, particularly in public forums. Bob, explaining yourself the way you did is called making an excuse, not tendering the appropriate apology due your readers. I think you owe all of us that have worked hard to shed the negative stereotypes too often depicted of our Irish heritage something more, especially sitting in your position. Brent, if there's a kid that should be on the bench for lacking social understanding, it's you buddy. Thanks for speaking up Shawn!

Shawn...don't be so sensitive. You act like the kid who never got picked to play on the team and now you're over-sensitive to any hint of disparity.

Proud of my Strong Irish Back and Facile Irish Mind

Shawn, Tá brón orm [I’m sorry] that I made you Tá mé ar buille [angry] with what you perceived as an ethnic slur about the Irish.

But, as an Irish American (you didn’t know Brewin was an Irish name? How about my grandparents then – Cahalan and Fitzgerald) born in the Dorchester section of Boston. I’m as proud of what I have done with my back – haul 100 pounds of radio, batteries, water, ammo and C-rations on my 125 pound frame as a Marine through the jungles of Vietnam – as what I do with my rather clever Irish mind here at GovExec.

Chill, or as we say in Gaelic, Tóg bog é [take it easy].

Was it necessary to paint the Irish in the way you did to write your short blurb? As a member of the press, don't you think you need to be more sensitive to ethnic stererotyping? I enjoyed reading your articles...but no more.
